Celiac Disease
The cause of Celiac Disease, also known as gluten sensitive enteropathy or celiac sprue, is unknown. Celiac is a digestive disorder triggered by consumption of the protein gluten. People who suffer from this disease have a disorder that makes their bodies react to gluten, which gradually damages the villi in the small intestine making their body unable to absorb certain nutrients. People diagnosed with celiac disease are therefore susceptible to malnutrition and can develop anemia. Symptoms of Celiac disease may include: gas, diarrhea, weight loss / weight gain, fatigue, anemia, bone or joint pain, behavioral changes, muscle cramps, seizures, missed menstrual periods, infertility, tooth discoloration or loss of enamel, itchy skin rash called dermatitis herpetiformis. The only treatment for celiac disease is a lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet.
